We don't use the religious idea of karma; on Otaku Pride karma is a measure of your contribution to the community.
As you gain more karma, the site will learn to trust you and you'll be able to do more things:

You can retag posts (edit the tags) |
There are a few ways that you can get or lose karma:

Someone responds to your post |

You voted down someone elses response |
Voting is how you tell people you like their response (or that you don't).

I wrote a live journal post on this a while back... I'll move it onto OP soon enough.
Jeff and Joel of Stack Overflow repeatedly say that Stack Overflow is not designed for discussion. So I wondered, what if Stack Overflow were a discussion site?
And so I began removing the Q&A specific traits and replacing them with ones that encourage a strong community discussion.
